What We've Found

Here are five current statistics highlighting disparities in swimming proficiency and drowning risks among underserved youth in the United States:

  1. High Risk Among African-American Youth: Approximately 57.5% of African-American children are classified as “at risk” in terms of swimming ability, indicating they are either unable to swim or uncomfortable in deep water.pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

  2. Elevated Drowning Rates: African-American children aged 10 to 14 drown at five times the rate of their white counterparts.en.wikipedia.org

  3. Impact of Socioeconomic Status: Children from low-income families are at a higher risk for drowning, with studies indicating that 79% lack proficient swimming skills.accuweather.com

  4. Parental Influence: If a parent or guardian cannot swim, there is only a 13% chance that their child will learn to swim, perpetuating a cycle of limited swimming proficiency in underserved communities.blog.myswimpro.com

  5. Lack of Formal Swim Training: Nearly 55% of American adults have never taken a swim lesson, with 63% of Black adults and 72% of Hispanic adults reporting never having received formal swim instruction.nypost.com

These statistics underscore the critical need for accessible swim education and water safety programs in underserved communities to address these disparities.
